Kristall CEO Proposed Consolidation of the Russian Diamond Complex

Maxim Shkadov, CEO of Smolensk-based Kristall, which is the Russian largest diamond manufacturer, has proposed to create a vertically integrated framework combining all the three segments of the "diamond pipeline" in Russia – mining, manufacturing and retail. He announced this view at a press conference in Smolensk, now quoted by local media.
“The best way out from the current situation would be to create a vertically integrated framework, which would embrace all the stages of the production process - from diamond mining to jewelry sales,” the Kristall CEO said cited by
This initiative was discussed at a meeting held last Monday between Yury Trutnev, Deputy Prime Minister, and Alexei Ostrovsky, Governor of the Smolensk Region. According to Maxim Shkadov, “it was agreed at the meeting that Kristall will prepare its proposals for further development of the industry and the decision on the fate of the company will be made taking into account the interests of the region.”
The spokesperson of Yury Trutnev confirmed the fact of the meeting to Interfax and did not rule out that its participants discussed ideas regarding the consolidation of the diamond mining and diamond manufacturing industries, but gave no details.
ALROSA, the Russian diamond mining monopoly, did not comment on the issue.
