State Government Assures Help for Surat Diamond Bourse

09 june 2014

The state government assured support to diamond businessmen for developing the Surat Diamond Bourse (SDB) in Surat, Rapaport reports citing DNA India. The assurance came after members of Surat Diamond Association (SDA) requested that the government allot land for SDB. "Surat is a polishing hub but it has greater capability. The state government is keen to develop the city, including SDB, as a diamond and jewelry hub and it will make all efforts to do so," said Saurabh Patel, the Minister of Finance, Tourism, Energy and Mines.
Patel was addressing a gathering of diamond businessmen during the inauguration of a new office of Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) in Surat. Terming SDB as important, he said that its growth will boost the city's economy and also create jobs. "Mumbai is a diamond and jewelry hub and there is no harm if Surat becomes the second one. Efforts should be made to make it an international trading center," he added.
The president of SDA, Dinesh Navadia, requested that the state government help solve long-pending issues of air-connectivity, finance and taxation system.
"With new government taking charge at center, we hope that it will abolish 2 percent import duty on polished stones, reduce duty on gold and increase credit period given to diamond companies to clear import dues from 90 to 150 days," he said. Earlier in the day, Patel attended an installation ceremony of Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) organized at Sarsana in Surat.
