Even a half-century after her untimely passing, the mystique of film actress Marilyn Monroe continues to inspire. Bloomberg BusinessWeek reports that a pair of rhinestone earrings once worn by the iconic American entertainer has been sold at auction for the sum of $185,000.
Monroe is said to have worn the earrings at least once: at the 1955 premiere of the Hollywood film "The Rose Tattoo", based on a play by Tennessee Williams, according to
Julien's Auctions sold the jewelry, part of a two-day auction of various Hollywood memorabilia at its Beverly Hills location, to an unnamed collector from abroad, taking a 20% cut from the sale, according to BusinessWeek. Other notable sales at the event included a lighter that lit the cigarettes of Humprey Bogart, which brought in $19,200, and Knight Rider star David Hasselhoff's very own 1986 Pontiac Firebird, which went for $152,600.
