Zim to open ‘diamond’ embassy in UAE

10 april 2014

Zimbabwe is set to open an embassy in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which would have no major diplomatic task to handle except to oversee the sale of the country’s diamonds.
During his visit to UAE, President Robert Mugabe was currently pushing the setting up of the embassy as well as trying to cut a few deals with the Arabs.
“The visit will, among other things, see the finalisation of arrangements to open a Zimbabwean embassy in Dubai and the consolidation of consular services as well as marketing opportunities for Zimbabwean minerals,” acting secretary in the Information Ministry Regis Chikowore was quoted as by NewZimbabwe.com.
“In recent months, there has been a rapid growth in the volume of trade and business exchange visits between Zimbabwe and the United Arab Emirates.
“Dubai has emerged as one of the leading global diamond platforms with Dubai Diamond Exchange where the country’s diamonds were sold last month.”
Zimbabweans are yet to realise meaningful benefits of Marange diamonds, since their discovery in 2006.
Marange miners and some government officials had been accused of siphoning the diamond revenue for personal use.
They denied the accusations.
Zimbabwe commenced diamond tenders in Dubai recently.
