Villagers red flag Rio Tinto project

Hundreds of villagers staged protests against the proposed Rio Tinto diamond mining project at Bunder at Kasera village of Chhatarpur district in Bundelkhand region on 12th Feb 2014. The demonstration was held during a public hearing held by district collector Masood Akhtar on the issue.
People of Buxwaha area opposing the proposed project stating it would lead to large-scale destruction of environment and affect local tribal population. The NGOs feel that while the project may provide employment to over 400 persons, it will affect the livelihood of nearly 5,000 tribals.
Tarun Malkani, chief operating officer, Rio Tinto Diamonds India, said they would continue to work within laws of the land to ensure we have clearances to develop a world class diamond mine in India
Rio Tinto is one of the world's major diamond producers through its 100% control of the Argyle mine in Australia, 60% of Diavik mine in Canada, 78% interest in Murowa mine in Zimbabwe.
