GJEPC organizes workshop on ‘Intellectual Property’ in Surat

03 february 2014

To provide more information on the issues of patents, design and trademark amongst the industry members, the Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) of India organized an awareness programme, supported by ASSOCHAM and the Controller General of Patents, Design and Trademarks, in Surat on January 31, 2014.
The Indian gem and jewellery industry needs to formulate its patenting strategy carefully, which entail creating more innovations, protecting innovations with the relevant form of Intellectual Properties, respecting other's IPs and extracting value from own IPs through licensing, commercialization and enforcement, to stay ahead of competition.
In terms of Intellectual Property, though patenting activity in India has grown significantly in recent years, very less patenting applications are filed by the diamond industry members. The importance of IP is pertinent today as India is not only the leading diamond cutting and polishing hub and exporter, but the country has become one of the largest consumers of polished diamonds as well, next only to the U.S. and Japan.
