About 98% of the exported from the DRC gold are smuggled - UN experts

15 january 2014

About 98% of gold exported from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are smuggled, and proceeds from these activities go to finance armed groups that dominate the eastern part of the African country, news agency Belga stated quoting a report by UN experts on DRC.
According to the document, many gold deposits in the DRC are located in "post-conflict" areas where armed conflicts and fighting was generally stopped, but the relevant gold production is is mixed with the yellow metal maturing from conflict zones. This happens not only in several cities in the eastern DRC, but also in neighboring countries - Uganda, Burundi and Tanzania.
According to the US Geological Survey, artisanal miners in the DRC produce about 10,000 kg of gold per year. Meanwhile, following the period from January to October 2013 merely 180.76 kg of gold was officially exported.
According to experts’ estimates, the cost of the smuggled gold exports from the DRC ranged between $383 million and $409 million in 2013. At the same time losses of the national budget on unpaid taxes range within $7.7-8.2 million.
