SA says Zim’s status as major diamond producer cannot be ignored

03 december 2012

South Africa, which is the incoming chair of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS), said the international community should support Zimbabwe’s efforts to benefit from its rich diamond resources.
The Herald newspaper quoted South Africa Mineral Resources Minister Susan Shabangu as saying that Zimbabwe’s status as a major gem producer cannot be ignored.
"[Let’s] stand together as a family and support initiatives to ensure that emerging economies effectively reap the benefit of the exploitation of their diamond resources," she told a KP meeting in Washington D.C.
"I recently had the honour of addressing executives from the diamond industry during Zimbabwe’s Diamond Conference hosted at Victoria Falls in November 2012.
“The conference sought to explore the changing dynamics of the industry and to explore modalities to best enable Zimbabwe to optimise exploitation of its rich diamond resources."
Marange diamonds had been under the international radar following accusations of human rights violations by state securities on artisanal miners.
Nongovernmental organisations had also accused government officials if siphoning diamond revenues at the expense of the Treasury.
