WDC: Need of the hour

23 october 2012

The 35th World Diamond Congress, organised in Mumbai proved as an important platform, as leading personalities of the global diamond industry discussed issues that plague the industry today, Diamond World reported in Weekly E-Post. It was for the first time that World Diamond Congress was organised in India. The event held much importance especially in the wake of turbulent times currently faced by the industry.
Industry think tanks brought to the fore subjects like Kimberley Process (KP), generic diamond promotion, conflict diamonds, synthetic/cultured diamonds and the Diamond Source Warranty Protocol (DSWP), in various brainstorming discussions. Among the various important topics discussed, generic diamond promotion garnered attention, as companies expressed concern that a lack of generic promotion could eventually lead to plunging demand for diamond products. All Bourses were called upon to collectively work towards enhancing internal and external communications.
Newly elected president of World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB), Ernie Blom, emphasised the importance of consumer confidence. The WFDB also announced a new partnership initiative, World Diamond Mark, which is a non-profit organisation which will look into marketing of diamonds and diamond jewellery.
In conclusion, the WFDB and International Diamond Manufacturer’s Association (IDMA) jointly appreciated efforts by Chair of Kimberley Process in regards to consulting all industry stakeholders to frame a new definition of conflicting diamonds.
