Probable diamond reserves of Siberia are estimated at 617 million carats

23 may 2012

Probable diamond reserves in P3 category in Siberia are estimated at 617 million carats, according to a recent statement by Yury Golubev, Head of department at FSUE Central Scientific Research Institute of Geologic Exploration, during conference “Diamonds of Siberia and Arctic Regions of the World” in Krasnoyarsk, cited by
All assumed diamond deposits are located in two Siberian regions, namely the Irkutsk Region (212 million carats of diamonds) and the Krasnoyarsk Territory (405 million carats). Meanwhile Evenki municipal distict accounts for the vast majority of the Krasnoyarsk Territory diamond reserves – 305 million carats.
Diamond reserves of the Irkutsk Region seem to be better explored. “Here we can see localization of top priority areas completed, while the same works are to be done in the Krasnoyarsk Territory and Evenki district,” – Golubev noted.
For the recent 15 years Russia has not evidenced any large diamond discoveries and nowadays Siberia is treated as the most prospective area in terms of diamond exploration and subsequent accretion of resources, in the words of Golubev.
“Due to high global prices for rough diamonds, the existing diamond deposits in Yakutia and the Arkhangelsk Territory are developed at priority rates, and we need to expand diamond reserves by means of development of new territories,” – the scientist added.
