Gokhran denies reports of Indian government request to buy rough

09 april 2012

Russia's state diamond stockpile agency, Gokhran, said it has not received a request from India to buy rough from its stockpile, and for the time being cannot legally sell to the Indians if it did, John Helmer reports on www.polishedprices.com.
Valeriy Fedosov, the Gokhran spokesman, told PolishedPrices, in response to reports in the Indian press that Anand Sharma, the Minister of Industry in New Delhi, requested from his Russian counterpart, Minister of Economic Development Elvira Nabiullina, that Russia set up a selling channel to India for rough diamonds held by the state at Gokhran.
The Indian media reports claim Sharma and Nabiullina discussed diamond supply on the sidelines of the India-hosted summit meeting of the BRICS countries in New Delhi late March.
According to the reports, Sharma asked Nabiullina to help in an early conclusion of a pact for long term supply of rough diamonds from the Russian diamond major Alrosa and its precious minerals repository Gokhran to India's Hindustan Diamond Co and MMTC (state owned trading company).
Sharma was also reported to have said that he wants Gokhran to invite MMTC and Hindustan Diamond Co to take part in their sales. The Russian Minister reportedly replied that she would look into the matter.
Meanwhile, the Russian Association has written a letter to the Indian Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), condemning Sharma's approach.
