KP Chairman answered questions at a web conference

05 april 2012

On Tuesday Gillian A. Milovanovic, recently appointed as Head of Kimberley Process, took part in online conference answering questions of the public pertaining to KP-related issues. Gillian Milovanovic was speaking about her plans within this office in 2012 and noted that restoring a feeling of collegiality, collaboration is a huge goal for her and one that she wants to see realized.
Within the scope of the web conference all subscribers could ask their questions through Twitter or chat interface. The audience comprised approximately 100 people who took advantage of the opportunity to raise the most topical issues related to KP.
According to the statement by Milovanovic, USA is committed to work at enhancement of transparency of KP by means of two methods. Firstly, official website of KP needs improvement and they are going to add comprehensive and updated information concerning the legal framework for KP in each participating country. Secondly, transparency is set to be improved having been taught by example: “My presence here is an obvious acknowledgement of our strive to improve transparency by means of providing the opportunity to ask any questions and get my answers,” – KP Chairwoman said.
Recently KP issued a warning regarding fake diamond certificates which flooded the international market and published an image of a fake certificate on its website – this can be also considered as an effort to optimize information flow in order to enhance transparency of KP.
Gillian Milovanovic expressed her confidence in further progress of controversial situation with Marange diamonds and the presence of Zimbabwe’s delegation at the next KP intersessional meeting scheduled in June, 2012.
“So far as Zimbabwe is concerned my role is to ensure in the regular processes of the Kimberley Process , that the monitoring visits are handled appropriately, which they have been. I certainly expect it will be,” – Milovanovic stressed during the conference.
Following the discussion Q&A session shifted to Facebook account of KP where public could ask their questions in comments: http://www.facebook.com/CoNx
