Myanmar to Hold Gems Emporium in March

05 march 2012

Myanmar will hold its annual gems show in the new capital of Nay Pyi Taw in March to encourage national gem traders to sell more quality gems, jade, pearl and jewelry, according to the Central Committee for Holding Myanmar Gems Emporium cited by Rapaport.
Organized by the Ministry of Mines, the 49th Myanmar Gems Emporium is to take place at Mani Yadana Jade hall from March 9 to 18 with preview dates set for March 6 to 8.
A total of 15,000 lots of gems will be displayed at the emporium, the committee said.
The gems emporium held in March 2011 drew 1,600 gem traders from abroad. The buyers were mostly from China, China's Hong Kong and Chinese Taipei.
Myanmar, a well-known producer of gems in the world, boasts ruby, diamond, cat's eye, emerald, topaz, pearl, sapphire, coral and a variety of garnet tinged with yellow.
Myanmar started to hold gem shows annually in 1964, introducing one more in mid-year in 1992 and the special one in 2004.
The latest official figures show that in 2010-2011, Myanmar yielded 46,810 tons of jade and 12.962 million carats of gems, which include ruby, sapphire, spinel and peridot, as well as 1,033 kilograms of pearl.
