Botswana GDP grows in third quarter as diamond exports resume

06 november 2009

The economy of Botswana, the largest diamond producer in the world in volume terms, expanded by 1.3 percent in the third quarter, according to Bank of Botswana Governor Linah Moholo, Antwerpfacetsonline reported.
She said that government spending and the relaxing of monetary policy gave a boost to industries outside of mining, according to Bloomberg News.
“As a result of the world economic upturn, diamond production has resumed in response to a steady revival of overseas demand for rough diamonds and it is expected that this trend will continue in the second half of the year,” she said in a speech to business owners in the capital, Gaborone, on Wednesday.
The resumption of diamond exports had also helped create a surplus in the current account of the balance of payments in the recent months, she said.
As a result, foreign exchange reserves are now increasing after months of declines.
Diamond exports provide the country's largest foreign currency earnings, and have played a key role Botswana's national development.
