Movado Group reports falling sales and plunging profits in second quarter

International luxury goods company Movado Group posted a 31 percent fall in second quarter sales to $89.7 million, while and net profits plummeted 94 percent to just $528,000.
For the first half of its fiscal year, Movado Group said it lost $8.4 million compared with net income of $9.4 million for the same period a year earlier, while sales dropped 32 percent to $157.3 million.
Despite the fall in sales and plunging net income, Movado Group President Efraim Grinberg said the results were pleasing in that the company managed to report a small profit.
The firm is forecasting improvement in sales trends during the second half of its fiscal 2010 year as retailers acquire stock ahead of the Christmas season.
