Kimberley Process denies decision made on whether to eject Zimbabwe

04 september 2009

The Kimberley Process (KP) said it has not yet made a decision on whether to eject Zimbabwe as a member of the international body, Antwerpfacetsonline reported.
Some press reports had "given the impression that the KP had already reached the decision not to suspend Zimbabwe,” the group said in a statement cited by Bloomberg News.
However, that was not the case, the KP said since a "final decision has yet been taken.”
Zimbabwe has attracted widespread condemnation over alleged human rights abuses at the Marange diamond fields where security forces have closed off the area to stamp out illegal mining.
Following a Kimberly Process (KP) review team visit in July, the body called for the "immediate demilitarisation" of the Marange fields and measures to stop smuggling.
The World Diamond Council last week said the country should implement the Kimberly Process recommendations or risk suspension.
However, Mines Minister Obert Mpofu said this week that the armed forces would only be removed after the government had addressed security issues.
