South Africa's April Diamond Production -65%

17 june 2009

South Africa’s diamond production fell 62 percent by volume in April 2009 compared with one year ago, according to a report by Statistics South Africa. The country’s total mineral production for the month declined 11 percent, with gold production down 13 percent and non-gold production decreasing 10 percent, year on year, RAPAPORT reported.
For the three months from February through April, total mineral production dropped 3.1 percent compared with the previous three months, with diamonds registering the heaviest decrease of all categories. Diamond production, which contributes 8.3 percent of the country's total mining volume, accounted for 2.3 percent of the decline.
De Beers Consolidated Mines (DBCM) remains the largest diamond mining company in South Africa, producing about 94 percent of the country’s output. Other sizable producers include Petra Diamonds, which owns the Cullinan mine, and alluvial miner Trans Hex. Statistics South Africa does not provide actual production numbers in its monthly mining production report.
