The former head of the Mir mine, Alexey Burkser was found dead in the pre-trial detention center in Yakutia, RIA Novosti was told by the media communication service of the Federal Penitentiary Service Regional Departments and the Investigative Committee of Russia.
According to preliminary data, the death was non-violent: Burkser committed suicide, the agency said.
The Investigative Department for High-Priority Cases of the Investigative Committee has started an inquiry.
Alexey Burkser, as well as Alexander Mann, the former acting Chief Engineer of Mir were arrested on Monday.
According to investigators, Burkser and Mann may be guilty of the death of eight miners at ALROSA’s Mir mine in 2017.
As it was established by the Investigative Committee, the Mir mine managers knew that the dam had been broken through on the day of the tragedy, but they did not stop operations and did not take the workers out of the danger zone when water started to flood the mine.
