Diamond recovered from Yubileynaya Pipe named after famous Yakutian geologist

24 july 2019
alrosa_logo.jpgALROSA has assigned the name of Pyotr Shishigin, one of the most famous representatives of the geological industry in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), to a large gem-quality diamond. Earlier, the head of the republic, Aisen Nikolaev addressed the company with the corresponding proposal. “The Pyotr Romanovich Shishigin Diamond has been added to the list of gems, which will be given the names of famous Yakutians as part of celebrating the 100th anniversary of the republic,” the company said in a press release distributed on Tuesday.
Pyotr Shishigin devoted over 40 years to geology and made a great contribution to the development of the mineral resource base of Yakutia. In many ways thanks to him, the management system of the exploration industry was fundamentally reorganized, and a number of important discoveries were made, including the Vilyuy-Markhа diamondiferous area with the Botuobinskaya and Nyurbinskaya diamond pipes.
The diamond, named after the famous Yakutian geologist, was unearthed this last May at Concentration Plant No. 14 of the Aikhalski Mining and Processing Unit of ALROSA from the ore of the Yubileynaya diamond pipe. This transparent octahedron crystal weighs 78.74 carats and is one of the largest gem-quality diamonds mined by ALROSA this year.
