No need for gemologists at DTC Botswana, Okavango Diamond – official

15 february 2019

Botswana does not need gemologists at Diamond Trading Company Botswana (DTCB) or Okavango Diamond Company (ODC) as they are not involved in polishing and cutting of diamonds, a government official has said.
Minister of Mineral Resources Eric Molale said this in parliament this week after MP Mephato Reatile had asked how many Batswana gemologists and diamond trading specialists were employed at DTCB and ODC, according to Mmegi.
He said DTCB’s mandate was restricted to sorting and valuing of rough diamonds.
Molale also said ODC had a team of seven Batswana currently performing rough diamond valuation, assortment quality assurance and diamond technical sale lots creation.
Gemologists are involved in diamond and gemstone buying, merchandising, appraising, jewellery design, lab research and grading, among other things.
