Rapaport Group puts up for sale parcels of 100% tested melee diamonds to support the trade and ensure consumer confidence

03 august 2016

The Rapaport Group invited customers to take part in an auction to be held on 9-18 August, where the company will offer for sale “the first 100% natural and untreated melee diamond parcels” in an attempt to solve a major ethical problem facing the industry. The press note distributed by the Group on Wednesday reads as follows:

The diamond trade is under increasing pressure due to the unethical behavior of dealers who mix synthetic diamonds into parcels of natural diamonds. While it is relatively economical to individually test single large size diamonds, it has often been uneconomical to test parcels of small melee diamonds that may contain thousands of individual stones. As a result, parcels of melee are often sold within the trade without testing, resulting in synthetic diamonds being sold to consumers as natural. The fact that melee diamonds are mostly sold without testing encourages mixing and misrepresentation. This is a major ethical problem for the trade and will severely damage consumer confidence when discovered.
The Rapaport Group believes that it is vital to support the trade and ensure consumer confidence by creating legitimate distribution channels for natural untreated melee. We are therefore providing clients with the opportunity to purchase parcels of 100% tested melee diamonds - where every individual diamond in the parcel has been tested to ensure that it is natural and untreated. In addition, we are also offering parcels of melee that have been statistically sample tested at a significance of 99% to a 1% tolerance level.
The first 100% natural and untreated melee diamond parcels and sample tested parcels will be offered for sale at the upcoming Rapaport auction to be held August 9-18. Prices for these parcels will be set by the bidders.
Rapaport will also be offering non-auction buyers an opportunity to place custom orders for select melee and larger diamonds that will be quality control graded and synthetic tested by Rapaport before delivery to clients. Rapaport operates RapLab quality control testing facilities in Mumbai, Ramat Gan and New York.
Clients interested in purchasing 100% natural untreated diamonds or sample tested diamonds may email trading@diamonds.net or call +1-702-893-9400.
As always I look forward to any comments or suggestions you may have. They can be emailed to me at martin@diamonds.net.
