Lab-made white and yellow diamonds went on their maiden sales online

Gemesis, a diamond company based in Florida and committed to manufacturing and sales of artificial diamonds only, announced the launch of a new version of their website featuring an online store. Now customers can buy colorless and fancy yellow diamonds online.

According to Gemesis’ press service, the company managed to reach a technological breakthrough making it possible to produce diamonds of a beautiful yellow hue. Until recently, fancy color diamonds were only available in mined form. Now they are available “from a glass-rube” at a much more attractive price than natural diamonds.

Earlier, colorless or "white" diamonds of high quality were also impossible to create in a laboratory. According to Forbes, it is the innovative production of these diamonds that can be a factor able to change the game on the jewelry scene, because, in the first place, white diamonds are the most popular choice of customers, and secondly, buyers, as well as retailers and jewelry designers will now have an opportunity to choose between these two types of real diamonds.

To avoid confusion it would be appropriate to clarify that it would be wrong to call lab diamonds manufactured by Gemesis "synthetic" because they are in fact real diamonds with the difference that they are made by people in the lab. The process of creating a diamond may take several months.

Most jewelers will not even tell them "by eye", because the difference can only be detected in jewelry laboratories using special equipment. Man-made diamonds are not only inferior, but superior to their natural counterparts in purity. Colorless Gemesis stones are certified as Type IIa, which is assigned to the purest category of diamonds. Rocks of this class are very rare in nature. Thus, they differ from natural diamonds only by the "place of production."

As distinct from their "wild" counterparts, Gemesis diamonds are grown in a safe and humane environment of laboratories, which, in contrast to the diamond fields, do not violate human rights. When purchasing such diamonds buyers do not have to worry about whether they are "conflict" or "blood" stones. True, the artificial diamond is much more prosaic compared with its counterpart shaped by nature over millions of years.

Gemesis started production with a very small batch. Currently, the "jewel box" of Gemesis contains 3,235 colorless or "white" diamonds and 832 fancy yellow diamonds. Most of them are graded as VS and above (JCK Online).

All lab diamonds are certified by the International Gemological Institute and manufactured to meet the requirements of environmental and corporate social responsibility. This is the principled position of Gemesis, which believes that "massive diamond mining operations are not in pace with increasing consumer consciousness," particularly with regard to what price is paid to extract beautifully sparkling stones. The collection of jewelry with artificial diamonds is meant for conscious and at the same time thrifty buyers, because artificial diamonds are much cheaper than natural having similar characteristics.

The largest diamond available on the Gemesis website is a 1.05 carat round diamond with J-color, VVs2 and “very good” cut is priced at $4,837.04. A similar diamond on the Blue Nile website, known for its attractive prices, is sold at $6,238, an approximate $1,400 difference (according to Forbes). It really makes some difference!

It seems that Gemesis does not yet have accurate data on how wide is the potential audience ready to prefer the magic of natural diamonds to their lab grown counterparts, so the company’s forecasts about future output are cautious - "depending on demand."
