Vogue for Tooth Jewelry

02 june 2009

Tooth jewelry has been in ever growing demand in recent years from modern fashionistas.

Today not only women but men as well go in for gracing their teeth with jewelry. It is assumed that teeth jewelry, whether it is just a diamond or some tiny piece of bijou made of white or yellow gold, gives your smile additional spell.

By analogy with piercing and tattoo, tooth jewelry pieces differ in their functionality: at client’s option they may be implanted temporarily or for ever.

The latter means that incrusting a gem will require tooth drilling. Exactly in this way pop-singer Madonna and the Simply Red rock-band musicians made their teeth look sightly.

Despite the fact that permanent implantation of a jewel is no more painful than scaling, the tooth itself, which is usually a front one, is irreparably damaged.

As with piercing, one’s decision to implant a tooth jewelry piece is related to conscious and well-gauged choice since any reversal to the initial condition will be accompanied by expensive surgical intervention to replace the tooth.

Taking into account such a somber possibility, tooth jewelry manufacturers are mainly offering products which can be fixed to teeth by way of special glue.

Until recently, this procedure was an exclusive privilege of professional dentists, but today there emerged a number of companies offering their customers not only sets of tooth jewelry pieces but also services to install them at their home.

As such, this procedure appears simple though requiring patience. Jewelry pieces are fixed with the so-called “biocompatible” tooth glue, the composition of which is similar to that used by dentists to glue orthodontic rings together.

The jewelry piece should be fixed on tooth enamel in strict compliance with the rules of oral hygiene.

Prior to gluing, teeth should be thoroughly cleaned. After that some glue is applied to the dry tooth and then the jewel is set on it. This is followed by drying with the help of an ultraviolet lamp.

According to Le Temps, a Swiss daily, experts on their part advise to visit only professional dentists to have your “tooth piercing” – this will allow you a lower risk of infection which may result from polluting the implantation area.

As for tooth jewelry pieces, they may be of a wide variety of shapes. The most simple are those imitating precious stones, or rhinestones which have a classic round shape resembling diamonds. Their colors may be various – red, green, black, blue, etc. A ready market is found by transparent, opaque, polished and nacre rhinestones. In greater value are those which are ingeniously made – enclosed in yellow or white gold in the shape of hearts, flowers, leaves or stars.

Those who intend to grace their teeth with jewels should know that after they are glued to your teeth it is recommended that you refrain from chewing gum or sticky sweets since this may result in your jewelry losing bond with your teeth.
