Contest announcement

Creative Contest “Our Diamonds for Our Future”

The coronavirus pandemic made us change our normal lifestyle. We have to work, interact and live in conditions of self-isolation and quarantine.

If for adults a temporary “social distance” may even be useful in some ways, for children it is extremely painful. Our children have switched to distance learning, they are deprived of their usual circle of communication, left without their favorite clubs, sports, devoid of walks and entertainment, they simply ended up being locked up.

But no quarantines or other barriers are able to limit children's imagination and creative development.

Rough&Polished invites everyone to help their children survive temporary constraints to good effect.

We announce a writing contest dedicated to the cause of our life, the diamond.

The history of diamond is the story of travelers, pioneers, researchers, heroes, and scientists. It tends to intertwine with the worlds of Allan Quatermain, Sherlock Holmes and James Bond.

Henry Rider Haggard, Arthur Conan Doyle, Ian Fleming, and Rudyard Kipling, they all once started with a short story. And who knows, maybe today we can help some talented kid to write a great story in the future.

Genres

For children under 10 years old – one drawing, or series of drawings, or comics

For children from 10 to 16 years old - an adventure story, detective story, science fiction or fantasy.

The length of stories is not limited, just show your imagination and maybe your story will captivate others.

Authors are invited to use their mother tongue for writing their stories.

Entries will be evaluated by the Jury composed of the Rough&Polished editors, a representative of AGD Diamonds, and a representative of the diamond industry. The jury is chaired by Vladimir Malakhov, Editor-in-Chief of Rough&Polished.

Rough&Polished invites industry colleagues to assist in holding this contest and join the Jury.

Prizes and awards

The jury established three nominations for this contest.

  1. The best artwork among children under 10 years old. One drawing, or a series of drawings, or comics.
  2. The best literary work among children from 10 to 14 years.
  3. The best literary work among teenagers from 14 to 16 years.

All participants of the Contest will be awarded Honorary Diplomas of the Contest.

The winner in each nomination will be awarded a trip to a diamond mining operation in the North-West of the European part of Russia.

AGD Diamonds will incur all expenses associated with the winners’ trip from their hometown to the Russian Federation and back, flights within Russia, accommodation for the entire travel period, insurance, excursion services in Moscow and Arkhangelsk, translation from Russian into their native languages and organization of excursions in Moscow and Arkhangelsk.

The winner in each nomination will be invited to take part in this trip together with one of his or her parents (legal representative).

The dates for this trip will be discussed separately with each of the winners. Such dates will be determined by the end of the global quarantine, removal of restrictions on trips and the winners’ own schedules.

The awarded prizes of the Contest will include taxes and fees established by the current legislation of the Russian Federation.

The 20 best works will be published on a separate page of Rough & Polished. These works will also be published in a writing collection in Russian and English.

Please e-mail your works to contest@rough-polished.com and keep it mind that the closing date for your entries will be June 15, 2020.

We expect you to e-mail your graphic works and drawings or their photocopies in the JPEG format.

Please send your texts in the Word format.

Dear adults, please do not help your children, let alone doing their work for them. Give them a chance to display self-dependence and imagination.

Thank you!

Yours faithfully,
Editors of Rough&Polished
