Reports say there could be huge deposits of diamonds in Nyamandlovu area in Matabeleland North, Zimbabwe.
However, state controlled weekly, Sunday News reports that a mining company (name withheld) that was granted a prospecting license to comb the area more than 10 years ago was suspected to be smuggling the mineral out of the southern African country claiming there were samples.
The weekly reports that the mining company was granted permission to explore for diamonds when the current mines minister Obert Mpofu was the governor for the area.
It reports that although the mines minister was non-committal to shed more light when asked, he had earlier said “we will be releasing more details very soon”.
Mpofu said if discovered that the company was smuggling gems the Zimbabwean government would ensure that the company accounts for the mineral they would have taken out under the guise of samples.
“We would demand to know where our minerals were being taken and where the money from their sales is,” he said.

In July 2007, the Namibian arm of Diamond Trading Company announced competitive selection among the country’s diamond cutting factories to be included into the first list of NDTC sightholders. At that time, Hard Stone Processing (Pty) Ltd (HSP) was already working in Namibia as an independent manufacturer and its factory successfully occupied a strong position among the leading sightholders turning into one of the three top diamond cutting companies in Namibia. Its CEO Burhan Seber gave this interview to Rough&Polished.
Botswana diamond miner, Debswana recently said that the temporary dip in diamond prices will likely see the company producing just below its target of 25 million carats for 2011. However, Esther Kanaimba-Senai, the Group’s Manager for Corporate and Public Affairs, told Rough&Polished in an interview that Debswana was not in trouble.
