RUSSIA – DIAMONDS – CRISIS
The financial crisis from one side and fast beneficiation from another are making people to buy expensive luxury goods. According to Izvestia, the jewellery sector gets a special growth in this period. Amazon.com had increased its diamond jewellery sales in two times in I Q 2008. The price of the jewellery pieces vary from $200 to $40 000. The experts are not surprised – the world is in financial crisis, and the expensive jewellery, which was always a good way to save the money, are in a big demand now.   

PETRA - TENDERS  - DIAMONDS
Petra Diamonds reported today that the average sales value of diamonds mined at its South Africa operations have increased in 2008 due to the strong market for rough diamonds.
The company reported that the average price achieved for diamonds mined at Koffiefontein rose 18.6 percent to $484 per carat in the first four months of the year, compared with the second half of 2007.
The March and April Koffiefontein tenders fetched an average $524 and $526 per carat respectively.
“This increase is due in part to a strong market for diamonds, and particularly for the higher value goods which form a substantial part of Koffiefontein’s production,” the company stated.
The average price achieved for July through December 2007 at Koffiefontein was $494 per carat.
Similarly, Petra said the average value per carat at its three fissure mines in South Africa was $231 per carat for the four months ending April 2008, compared to $182 per carat in the preceding six months, Rapaport reports.

The Harry Winston Diamond Corporation achieved record consolidated sales during the past year, generating a 35% increase in gross margin and a 48% increase in consolidated earnings from operations over the previous year. The Company’s annual consolidated sales rose by 22% to $679.3 million with earnings from operations reaching $217.7 million, compared to $558.8 million and $146.8 million, respectively, for the previous year, Israelidiamond.Co.Il reports.
