DIAMONDS – PRICES - GROWTH
The diamond demand and offer were in the state of equilibrium in 2007. The noticeable reduce of rough offering (in carats) could be seen, the reason was an Argyle mine production reduce. The consolidation of diamond prices helped the production growth: from 100 mln ct by $12.9 billions to 172 mln ct by $13.8 billions.
The demand for diamonds will grow 3-5 % in the period up to 2015. This will lead diamond deficit and the price growth. But this doesn’t take into account the huge stocks of all the diamond-brilliant chain and the stocks of diamond retailers, the Idexonline authors say.

INDIA - APRIL - NET DIAMOND ACCT.
India's polished diamond exports rose 42 percent to $1.24 billion in April, according to the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC.) Polished imports grew 197 percent to $652.29 million, causing net polished exports (polished exports minus imports) to fall 10 percent to $588.83 million.
Rough imports grew 23 percent to $993.53 million for the month, and rough exports rose 121 percent to $104.69 million. India’s net rough imports (rough imports less rough exports) increased 17 percent to $888.84 million.
India’s April net diamond account (net polished exports less net rough imports) amounted to negative $300.01 million, compared to $107.08 million in the red a year earlier, Rapaport reports.

JEWELRY – SHANGHAI - QUALITY
Jewelry Shanghai 2008 concluded Sunday after a weekend-long exhibition that started May 8 at the Shanghai New international Expo Center. On the last day of the show, hours before companies began packing up their booths, foot-traffic was light, mostly made up of members of the public, with a few trade members here and there.
Prominent designs included gold jewelry set with small size diamonds, with a good deal of jade, amber, pearls and precious stone pieces all around. Diamantaires noted good sales of SI+ / D-G goods.
Jane Kao of Taipei, Taiwan-based jewelry wholesale company Bennie Wang Jewelry, exhibiting for the first time at Jewelry Shanghai, remarked that the visitor numbers were much lower than she had expected and that most of the attendees she saw were consumers, Idex reports.
