Petra Diamonds

24.11.2009

Petra Diamonds is a rapidly growing diamond mining group, focused on the African continent. Petra Diamonds was founded in 1997.
A number of recent acquisitions have established Petra Diamonds as one of the world’s largest independent diamond groups by resources, with a total resource base of 265 million carats, worth US$27.3 billion (as at September 2008 Resource Statement).

Petra is one of the few sizeable quoted companies to offer investors pure exposure to the diamond market. In the financial year ended 30 June 2009, Petra’s production surpassed 1 million carats as targeted, recording a five-fold increase over the 200,287 carats produced in the previous financial year.

Petra’s Mining Operations
In South Africa, Petra has five producing mines – Cullinan, Koffiefontein, Helam, Sedibeng and Star. The Group has also reached agreement to acquire a further asset from De Beers – the Kimberley Underground mines, also in South Africa. In Tanzania, Petra has recently acquired a 75% interest in the Williamson mine.

Petra’s exploration projects:
Bostwana-based Kalahari Diamonds includes 48,500km2 ‘on craton’ prospecting licence area, 100% interest is owned by Petra.
Sierra Leone-based Kono Project is explored jointly with Stellar Diamonds (Petra has 51% interest).
