Diavik Diamond Mine (Canada, DDMI)

08.06.2009

The Diavik Diamond Mine is a diamond mine in the North Slave Region of the Northwest Territories, Canada, about 300 kilometres (186 miles) north of Yellowknife.

The mine is owned by a joint venture between the Harry Winston Diamond Corporation and Diavik Diamond Mines Inc., a subsidiary of Rio Tinto Group. Diavik Diamond Mines Inc. is the operator of the mine. The two joint venture participants retain the right to market independently their respective share of the diamonds produced from the Diavik Diamond Mine, which is managed by DDMI.

The lifespan of the mine is expected to be 16 to 22 years.

The mine consists of three kimberlite pipes associated with the Lac de Gras kimberlite field and is located on an island 20 square kilometres (8 sq mi) in Lac de Gras and is informally called East Island. It is about 220 kilometres (137 mi) south of the Arctic Circle. The three pipes are mined using open pit mining methods. These pipes are called A154 South, A154 North and A418. Bulk sampling of a fourth pipe, A21, was undertaken in 2007 to assess whether it should be included in the reserve.
All three kimberlite pipes will also be mined from underground. Diavik expects that the transition to total underground mining of the pipes will be completed around 2012.
