The project site is located in the northwest part of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). From the administrative point of view the project site is a part of Olenekskiy ulus. The Talakhtakh river is 200 km northward from the administrative centre of the ulus, the settlement of Olenek. The settlement of Saskylakh, the administrative centre of Anabarskiy ulus, located 180 km to the north of the Talakhtakh river, is closer to the project site. In the settlement there is a third-class year-round airport intended to receive An-24, An-26 and smaller aircraft.
The nearest inhabited locality to the deposit is the settlement of Ebelyakh, the base of Anabarskiy Ore-Dressing and Processing Enterprise located on the right bank of the Anabar river (in the estuary of the Ebelyakh river), 70 km to the northwest from the Talakhtakh river. There is a platform suitable for reception of helicopters and An-2 type airplanes. The distance from the settlement of Saskylah to the settlement of Ebelyakh along a straight line is 120 km. There is a first-aid post, a post office, a long-distance call office, and a canteen at the placer mine.
160 km downstream of the settlement of Saskylah on the Anabar river there is the settlement of Uryung-Khaya, a storage terminal of cargoes delivered by sea with warehouses, and petroleum products storage facilities.
110 km upstream the estuary of the Ebelyakh river on the M.Kuonapka river there is a small locality, the settlement of Dzhelinda of Olenekskiy ulus.
There are no year-round roads in the region; the freight is transported in the winter by the river ice. In high-water periods the Anabar river is passable for small river vessels and for a short term (5 - 10 days) may be used for delivery of cargoes from the settlement of Uryung-Khaya to the estuary of the Khara-Mas river.
The river network around the project area is represented by the Anabar river and its tributaries - the B.Kuonapka, the Ebelyakh, the Billyakh, the Mayat, the Khara-Mas rivers and others. One of large right tributaries of the B.Kuonapka river is the Talakhtakh river.
The Talakhtakh river flows into the B.Kuonapka's river in its lower reaches, its length is 20 km. The river channel along the whole its length meanders greatly, its width varies from 10 to 30 m.
The climate of the region is sharply continental, arctic, with a long (7-8 months) severe winter and a short (2-2,5 months) summer. The average annual temperature is negative: -14.5°C. The average monthly temperature of the coldest months (December, January) is -30 to -35°C, the average monthly temperature of the warmest months (July, August) is +11°C. Maximum summer temperature is +35°C, minimum winter temperature is -70.5°C. The period of positive temperatures is usually 90 to 100 days.
The fauna of the region is poor. There are elks, reindeers, gluttons, wolfs, polar foxes, sables, ermines, hares, lemmings. In the summer ducks, divers, sandpipers, seagulls nest there. Polar partridges, Siberian jays, polar owls, titmouses and other small birds constantly live in the region. In the rivers and lakes one may found graylings, pikes, whitefishes, freshwater cods, minnows.
Indigenous people – the Yakuts and the Evenkis - are engaged in reindeer breeding, fur farming, hunting of fur animals, fishery.
For building purposes imported materials are used at the project site, there is virtually no building timber in the region.
Technical cargo may be delivered to the project site via the following routes:
1. Yakutsk-Tiksi-Uryung-Khaya (river-sea-river during the navigation season), and further by winter snow roads to the work sites;
2. Yakutsk-Lensk (river), Lensk-Mirny-Udachny (year-round road), Udachny-work sites (winter snow roads).
