ALROSA Co. Ltd. was set up under Decree 158C of the President of the Russian Federation 'On the Establishment of the Almazy Rossii-Sakha Joint Stock Company' signed on 19 February 1992.

 

History

1954
Discovery of the Zarnitsa (Lightning) Pipe- the first kimberlite deposit in Russia.
1955
Discovery of the Mir (Peace) Pipe.
Discovery of the Udachnaya (Lucky Strike) Pipe.
1957
On January 4, 1957, the Board of the USSR Ministry of Non-ferrous Metallurgy adopted the resolution "On Industrial Development of the Vilyui Diamond Deposits" which provided for the construction of diamond mining and processing facilities in the vicinity of the Mir Pipe and the Khabardin Valley and Irelyakh River alluvial placers. The Yakutalmaz Trust with Victor Tikhonov as its Director was established on the basis of the existing Dzhugdzhugzoloto Trust in Mirny to manage the construction activities.
The commercial development of diamond deposits started when a pilot processing factory was built by the Vilyui expedition and commissioned on June 10, 1956. In December 1956 the factory was incorporated into Yakutalmaz as 1 Ore Processing Factory.
1959
The USSR sold its first 13,000-carat lot of Yakut diamonds on the world market.
Dredge ¹ 201 (a floating concentrating factory) started producing diamonds in October.
1961
The Aikhal mine was set up and the construction of Processing Factory ¹ 8 started in January. The Factory produced its first diamonds in August. At the end of January the Factory began processing the rock mass from the Mir Pipe.
Factory ¹ 5 was put into operation.
1979 
The Udachny mine was re-organized into the Udachny Integrated Mining and Processing Plant in February. The first batch of powerful 120-ton Kamatsu dump trucks started operating at the Udachnaya pit.
1994 
The Botuobinskaya kimberlite pipe was discovered on March 29, 1994.
1997  
Trial operation started at the processing facility at the Catoca deposit in Angola on July 31, 1997, and the first diamonds were produced shortly after.
ALROSA and De Beers signed a trade agreement in Moscow.
1999
The Internationalnaya underground mine and ALROSA's Nyurba pilot processing factory were put into operation on August 13-14.
2006 On October 31, 2006 the talks between the presidents of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Angola in Moscow concluded in signing a Memorandum of Understanding between ALROSA and ENDIAMA (Angola’s national diamond mining enterprise).
The MOU defined the grounds for cooperation between the parties in diamond exploration and development, and personnel training in the fields of scientific research and technology.
ALROSA, ZARUBEZHNEFT JSC and DARK OIL COMPANY also signed a Memorandum of Understanding on joint prospecting, exploration and production of hydrocarbons with SONANGOL (Angola’s national oil and gas exploration and production company).
2007
The Company has exceeded the maximum volume of prospecting and exploration works performed by the USSR diamond mining industry.
ALROSA, Sonangol (Angolan National Energy Company), and Dark Oil (an Angolan oil company) signed an agreement on prospecting and exploration for oil and gas in the Lower Congo and Upper Kwanza zones, in the basins of the Etosha, Okawango and Kassanje Rivers, and in the shelf zone of Angola.
A certificate establishing the fact of discovery in 2007 of the primary kimberlite deposit of Verkhne-Munskoye in the Olenyok Ulus (district) of the Repubublic of Sakha (Yakutia) has been issued to ALROSA by the Federal Agency for Subsoil Use under the RF Ministry of Natural Resources.


Shareholders of ALROSA are:

Russian Federation: Ministry for Property Relations of the Russian Federation: 37%.

Republic of Sakha (Yakutia): the Ministry for Management of the State-Owned Property of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia): 32%.

Employees of enterprises and organisations of the diamond industry, as well as other individuals: 23%.

Administrations of the districts (Ulus) of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) on whose territories the Company operates: 8%.

 

Market positions
ALROSA is Russia's largest diamond company engaged in exploration, mining, manufacture and sales of diamonds and one of the world's major rough diamond producers.
In 1996 the company's rough diamonds sales amounted to US $1.6 billion

Production
In 2006 ALROSA produced, including the diamond production of OJSC ALROSA-Nyurba, USD 2 332.2 million worth of rough diamonds, exceeding the target by 2.4%.

Sales of products
The core product sales amounted to USD 2 864.5 million, while net profit reached RUR 15 579 million.

Resources
ALROSA accounts for about 100% of all rough diamonds produced in Russia and for about 20% of the world's rough diamond output.
Geological surveys indicate that the company has sufficient diamond reserves to maintain production at the current level for the next 50 years.
